Fernand Fonssagrives, who earned fame as a fashion photographer in the 1950s and was regarded as an important figure in 20th-century photography, has died at age 92. His death last Wednesday following a brief illness was not announced until after a private funeral service in Little Rock, where Fonssagrives, a native Parisian, made his home for the past 30 years.

A major retrospective of Fonssagrives' work will be held in September at London's Michael Hoppen Gallery. Among his earliest subjects was his wife, Lisa Fonssagrives, a storied Swedish beauty who became one of the world's top models. Fonssagrives photographed his wife and other models for publications such as Town and Country, Life, Vogue and the original Vanity Fair.

During the 1950s, Fonssagrives was among the most sought-after commercial photographers in New York, and his work often took him around the world.
